Reason I didn't get the kinivo as the cigarette plug is hard wired and the output on it isn't enough to power most current phones effectively if you are streaming music and using nav, etc. I tried it vs the same songs on a flash stick and there was very little to no difference, but if the sound is a lot better head to head, I'd consider it. Just curious as I bought that one last week and it sounds pretty great. Is this the one you tried? link to amazon Downside is it also tries to route all audio through to the car's Bluetooth system instead of sending out to the A2DP device when it reads text messages, emails, etc. I had to disable it to use the built in Google Now system. No option to make it listen to built in mic. On the Moto X though, the Moto Voice software automatically listens on BT only. The downside though is this - Nexus 5 using Google Now, I can trigger it via the "OK Google" hot word (when plugged in) since it can listen on built in mic instead of only via BT. I just haven't tested receiving a call yet to see if it'll ring through. I switched to a Moto X 2nd Gen recently and so far behavior is exactly the same. If I see it ringing and answers, then the audio comes over the head unit. However, I don't hear the phone ringing when people call me. When I have BT paired to my car and my A2DP device (NAXA NAB-4002) phone calls - mic and audio comes out through the head unit if I make the call. This is different than my car's behavior.
